AN ANNOTATED SUMMARY OF ABSTRACTS RELATING TO CORD BLOOD TRANSPLANTATION THAT WERE PRESENTED AT THE BMT TANDEM MEETINGS FEBRUARY 13-17, 2008 IN
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.

See Category XI, Recent Cord Blood Transplantation Conferences, Citation II:

1. Data on chronic GVHD (2 abstracts)
• Data indicating that cGVHD is more frequent and more resistant to immune-suppression therapy using PBSC vs BM.
• A comparison of outcomes using bone marrow (BM) or umbilical cord (UCB) as stem cell source in children which indicated that UCB patients have less chronic GVHD.
[These abstracts could suggest that UCB transplants should be utilized to avoid cGVHD, especially in comparison to PBSC transplants.]

2. Characterization of acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in unrelated cord blood transplantation (UCBT).

3. Unrelated cord blood transplantation in adults with lymphoid malignancies.

4. A study of double umbilical cord blood transplantation with reduced intensity conditioning and sirolimus-based GVHD prophylaxis indicating that the risk of acute and chronic GVHD are low when sirolimus and tacrolimus are used as GVHD prophylaxis.

5. The feasibility of using CCR5Δ32/Δ32 hematopoietic stem cell transplants for immune reconstitution in HIV-infected children.

6. The use of UCBT in congenital disorders (4 abstracts).
• Outcomes of HLA identical related CBT and BMT in patients with beta-thalassemia or sickle cell disease.
• UCBT for transfusion-dependent thalassemia.
• Unrelated UCBT congenital childhood diseases.
• UCBT in 159 young patients with peroxisomal and lysosomal storage disorders.

7. Improved outcome for transplantation of pediatric patients with non-malignant disorders with unwashed plasma depleted cord blood (PD CB).

8. Unrelated UCBT after myeloablative conditioning in 98 adult patients with acute leukemia.

9. A novel method to reduce rates of extensive cGVHD without increased relapse for UCBT.

10. A analysis of risk factors associated with graft failure, outcomes following UCBT for Hurlers syndrome and chronic GVHD. (3 abstracts).
